Luke Dutton

BVSc MRes MVetMed PhD DACVIM (Cardiology) MRCVS

American and RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology

Luke developed a strong interest in veterinary cardiology and research during his undergraduate degree and graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2015. He spent a year in a mixed first opinion practice on the south coast of England, where he honed his clinical skills and deepened his commitment to patient care. Luke then moved to the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) to embark on a Master of Research degree, which was awarded in 2017. His research focused on cardiac stem cell biology, further fuelling his passion for advancing the field of veterinary cardiology.

Following his Master’s, Luke stayed at the RVC to complete his PhD, where he modelled feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy using induced pluripotent stem cells. This cutting-edge research underscored his dedication to finding innovative solutions for cardiac conditions in animals. He then returned to full-time clinical work as a cardiology intern at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge. After 6 months of internship, Luke returned to the RVC to embark on an 3-year American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine residency in veterinary cardiology, to become a board-certified specialist in veterinary cardiology.

Throughout his career, Luke has remained passionate about cardiology as a field, driven by a desire to improve the lives of animals through expert cardiac care. He is committed to delivering compassionate and comprehensive patient care, ensuring that each animal receives the best possible treatment. Luke values clear and empathetic communication with clients; helping pet owners understand their pets’ conditions and treatment options.

Outside of work, Luke enjoys going to the gym, gardening, walking/hiking, and has recently started a new hobby of beekeeping. These activities provide a well-rounded balance to his professional life and reflect his appreciation for both physical health and nature.
