Information for Referring Vets

The team at SVS are committed to working closely with our surrounding vets to meet the needs of the veterinary community.

We believe that the referral process should not be about pets being passed from one black box to another and then back again. Referrals work best when vets in first opinion practice and specialty practice have continuous and open dialogue with one another.

How to Refer

Clinical Advice

If you need some advice on a case then we are happy to help. Whether it is a quick bit of advice on a case that you are managing in your clinic or a case that you want to discuss possible referral, we are happy to try and help.

Unfortunately, we are often busy with cases in the clinic and so this service is not a replacement for a telemedicine service. If you require a detailed case review or a review of diagnostic imaging studies, we suggest that you work with one of the companies that specialise in those services.

If your need for advice is urgent (response needed within 48 hours) then please call us.

If you can wait longer for advice and want to provide us with a bit more detail then please email or fill in our online form.

Clinical Advice

Working Together

The best outcomes always come from open communication.

We rely on referring practices to provide complete case details, including notes and diagnostic test results, and to make pet owners aware of what to expect and the associated costs. They can be directed to our website for some of this information but we find it comes best directly from you!

Once a patient has been referred to us we will contact the owner to make appointment arrangements and make sure that they have a clear understanding the process.

We will update you within 24 hours of our intial consultation to provide a brief update on what is going on with your patient. We will provide you with further updates after any significant changes during hospitalisation and again once we discharge a patient. We will aim to provide you with a complete referral report as soon as possible after a patient discharge but this may be delayed in cases of pending diagnostics.

We will continue to communicate with you and the pet owner about any ongiong needs with respect to the condition that led to the original refrral. We will direct all inquiries not related to this condition back to your clinic unless another referral is requested.

We believe that the best patient care comes from local care with trusted professionals that have a longstanding and holistic relationship with the pet and client. Where it is practical and agreeable to all parties concerned, we will advise that follow-up care is performed at your clinic in most cases, but we remain available to provide advice and to see pets again if there is a clinical need or if your practice or the client state this as a preference
