Orthopaedic Surgery
Our specialist-led orthopaedic service focusses on treating conditions of the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. The service does this in an evidence-based manner, meaning that we will always primarily recommend treatment options that are backed by robust science. In situations where clinical research is lacking in the published veterinary literature, we will always aim to present the least invasive and most justifiable treatment option first, guided anecdotally by our wealth of experience in the field. We do however make every effort to avoid advocating for surgical interventions that have a weak scientific backing or offer unpredictable and unreliable outcomes for pets and their owners.
The procedures offered by the orthopaedic service include (but are not limited to):
-
Lameness assessment
-
Joint surgery (e.g. TPLO, corrective surgery for patellar luxation)
-
Arthrodesis (i.e. fusion of joints)
-
Arthroscopy (i.e. keyhole surgery)
-
Fracture repairs and trauma management (including minimally-invasive repairs)
-
Angular limb deformity correction
-
Hip replacements
By working within a multidisciplinary hospital, our orthopaedic service is able to offer a comprehensive approach to your pet’s condition. We are able to use all imaging modalities (x-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI) when searching for the cause for a pet’s lameness, guided by the support of our recognised specialist in veterinary diagnostic imaging. We are also able to offer the most effective and up-to-date pain relief, with the help of our specialist-led anaesthesia and analgesia team. For patients with multiple complex comorbities or that require more intensive care during their hospitalisation, we can readily discuss their management with our specialist internal medicine or cardiology services, to ensure the safest possible all-around care. This collaborative team approach to patient management, combining the skills of all disciplines across the hospital, means that we are ideally placed to look after polytrauma patients - who may have sustained a variety of complex injuries as a result of a significant accident.
Please ask your vet to organise an appointment with us if you would like your pet to be seen by one of our orthopaedic specialists - we will be delighted to help if we can.
