Cardiology

Our cardiology specialist provides comprehensive care for dogs and cats with suspected or confirmed heart disease. We see a wide range of conditions, from heart murmurs in young puppies and kittens to more complex problems such as heart failure or abnormal heart rhythms. Whether your pet has recently been diagnosed or is showing worrying signs like coughing, breathlessness, or collapse, we are here to help.

Common reasons for referral to the cardiology service include:

  • Heart murmurs: especially in young animals where early assessment can identify congenital defects that may benefit from corrective procedures

  • Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias): diagnosed using ECG analysis and Holter monitoring (ambulatory 24-hour ECG)

  • Breathing problems:  screening for potential causes such as congestive heart failure, airway disease, and pleural or pericardial effusion (which may include collaboration with our internal medicine service)

  • Collapse or fainting episodes: which can be caused by underlying cardiac rhythm disturbances or structural heart disease.

  • Congenital cardiac defects: where we manage conditions like pulmonic stenosis and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) using minimally-invasive techniques such as balloon valvuloplasty and device closure

We also offer pre-breeding heart screening for breeds at risk of inherited heart conditions, helping responsible breeders make informed decisions.

Our hospital is equipped with cutting-edge tools to investigate and manage heart disease:

  • Echocardiography (ultrasound):  including spectral and colour Doppler imaging to assess heart structure and function.

  • Electrocardiography (ECG):  for detecting abnormal heart rhythms

  • Holter monitoring:  a 24-hour (up to 7 day) ECG to investigate intermittent signs like fainting or unusual rhythms

  • Thoracic radiographs (X-rays)

  • Blood pressure measurement

  • Interventional cardiology: we have equipment and expertise to perform interventional procedures such as PDA closure and balloon valvuloplasty

  • Pericardiocentesis and pericardiectomy: used to manage pericardial effusion in selected cases (in collaboration with our soft tissue surgery service)

Most patients attend the cardiology service as day cases, but those with severe conditions may require hospitalisation for stabilisation or closer monitoring.

Cardiac conditions often intersect with other areas of veterinary medicine. That is why we work closely with colleagues in internal medicine, anaesthesia, emergency medicine, and soft tissue surgery to provide joined-up and personalised care for each patient.

Our cardiology team is passionate about improving quality of life for pets with heart disease and supporting their families every step of the way.
